The Naranjo de Bulnes is one of the highest peaks in the Picos de Europa, Spain. The summit at 2518m is guarded on all sides by vertical limestone cliffs. Leo and Tim Emmett set out make the first BASE jump from the peak.
An initial inspection of the upper part of the wall after climbing the east face did not reveal a sufficiently safe exit point. Instead they climbed from the ground to a ledge 584ft up the north face. Encountering loose, run out climbing they arrived at a ledge suitable to jump from.
A magical sunset melted in to one horizon as a full moon rose on the other. A magnificent cloud inversion flooded the wall, obscuring the ground and landing zone view. Impossible to jump in such conditions they donned their parachutes and anxiously hoped the cloud would recede. On the brink of darkness their prayers were answered and the through the fog they made out the patch of snow that was to be their landing zone.
Without hesitation Leo leapt in to the void, Tim tossed the bag of climbing gear finding himself in a moment of extreme commitment before he too launched into the abyss. 3 terrifying seconds of freefall followed by a 2 minute canopy ride saw the pair of adrenalin intoxicated Para-Alpinists embrace after landing safely right at the door of the Refugio!
